Fault activation by hydraulic fracturing in western Canada

Abstract: Hydraulic fracturing has been inferred to trigger the majority of injection-induced earthquakes in western Canada, in contrast to the midwestern United States where massive saltwater disposal is the dominant triggering mechanism. A template-based earthquake catalog from a seismically active Canadian shale play, combined with comprehensive injection data during a 4-month interval, shows that earthquakes …

2016 One-Year Seismic Hazard Forecast for the Central and Eastern United States from Induced and Natural Earthquakes

Increased seismic activity, whether defined as induced or natural, produces high hazard. Conversion of ground shaking to seismic intensity indicates that some places in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Arkansas may experience damage if the induced seismicity continues unabated. The chance of having Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) VI or greater (damaging earthquake shaking) …

Microseismicity Induced by Deep Wastewater Injection in Southern Trumbull County, Ohio

In this study, multistation waveform template matching as an earthquake fingerprint scanning technique to investigate the potential relationship between the earthquake and the injection operations is used. Earthquakes Induced by Hydraulic Fracturing in Poland Township, Ohio

Felt seismicity induced by hydraulic fracturing is very rare, with only a handful of reported cases worldwide. Using an optimized multistation cross‐correlation template‐matching routine, 77 earthquakes were identified in Poland Township, Mahoning County, Ohio, that were closely related spatially and temporally to active hydraulic fracturing operations. After all investigation, it appears the hydraulic fracturing induced …

Characterization of an Earthquake Sequence Triggered by Hydraulic Fracturing in Harrison County, Ohio

In this paper, the first evidence of positive magnitude earthquakes on a previously unmapped fault in Harrison County, Ohio, that can be related to a hydraulic fracture operation, is shown. Besana‐Ostman, Ilya Dricker Characterization of an Earthquake Sequence Triggered by Hydraulic Fracturing in Harrison County, Ohio Seismological Research Letters …

Induced or Triggered Earthquakes in Texas: Assessment of Current Knowledge and Suggestions for Future Research

This project assessed the relationship between locations of historical Texas earthquakes, petroleum fields, and injection disposal wells, e.g., wells used to dispose of flowback fluids from hydrofracturing operations. Nearly two-thirds of all Texas earthquakes have occurred in/near petroleum fields or near injection disposal wells; this suggests many Texas earthquakes might be human-caused. This report suggests …
