Causal factors for seismicity near Azle, Texas

This investigation found a plausible connection between the series of earthquakes near Azle, Texas, in November 2013 began along a mapped ancient fault system and human activity: Pore-pressure models demonstrated that a combination of brine production and wastewater injection near the fault generated subsurface pressures sufficient to induce earthquakes on near-critically stressed faults. Bibliography: Matthew …

Air toxics and birth defects: a Bayesian hierarchical approach to evaluate multiple pollutants and spina bifida

While there is evidence that maternal exposure to benzene is associated with spina bifida in offspring, to our knowledge there have been no assessments to evaluate the role of multiple hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) simultaneously on the risk of this relatively common birth defect. In the current study, we evaluated the association between maternal exposure …

Planning for Fracking on the Barnett Shale: Urban Air Pollution, Improving Health Bases Regulation, and the Role of Local Governments

In the last decade hydraulic fracturing for natural gas has exploded on the Barnett Shale in Texas. Local governments in Texas, however, do not currently have the regulatory authority, capacity, or the information required to close the regulatory gap. Furthermore, government bodies in charge analysed data in an inappropriate way to claim there was no …

Big Oil, Bad Air: Fracking the Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas

The story of Lynn Buehring is the story of the common people in Karnes County, Texas. It has been jointly reported by the Center for Public Integrity, InsideClimate News and The Weather Channel. Lynn suffers from many medical ailments, caused by oil and gas production in the Eagle Ford shale play, which is conducted in …

Induced or Triggered Earthquakes in Texas: Assessment of Current Knowledge and Suggestions for Future Research

This project assessed the relationship between locations of historical Texas earthquakes, petroleum fields, and injection disposal wells, e.g., wells used to dispose of flowback fluids from hydrofracturing operations. Nearly two-thirds of all Texas earthquakes have occurred in/near petroleum fields or near injection disposal wells; this suggests many Texas earthquakes might be human-caused. This report suggests …

Maternal Exposure to Ambient Levels of Benzene and Neural Tube Defects among Offspring

Mothers living in census tracts with the highest benzene levels (0.9 – 2.33 ppbv) were 2.3 times more likely to have offspring with spina bifida than were women living in census tracts with the lowest levels (odds ratio = 2.30; 95% confidence interval, 1.22–4.33). No significant associations were observed between anencephaly and benzene or between …
